What should I know about being pregnant?

What should or shouldn't I do if I'm Pregnant?

With all this talk about celebrity babies I was curious to know some risks involved with pregnancy and just with things you may have to watch out for.  I was reading some articles today and I saw some tid bits on pregnancy that you may not know.

1. I read this one particular one from "Canadian Living" the August 2008 issue and it says "A new study shows that even one asthma attack in the first three months can increase a baby's risk of birth defects, such as a cleft plate, by 48 per cent."  The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says that "pregnant women with asthma consult an allergist when they learn of the pregnancy; avoid common triggers like dust mites, animal dander and smoke; and check with their doctor regarding the safest options and dosages of required medications."

2. I also read on http://www.articlesbase.com/pregnancy-articles/breastfeeding-some-facts-you-may-not-know-440983.html that breast-feeding your baby reduces the risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.  Also "Breast fed babies has reduce chances of developing Type 1 & 2 diabetes in later life."  This was a great website by the way.

3. "The longer you breastfeed, the greater you reduce the risk of later obesity for your child."

4. "Infant diarrhea, irrespective of wealth, health or social background, is greatly reduced through breastfeeding."

5. "Breastfeeding increases the maternal bond with your baby."

6.  It is ok to dye your hair or put highlights in it only after the babies 2nd or 3rd Trimester before you think about getting rid of those roots.  I wouldn't do it all at personally because the study hasn't been proven yet and you can never be too safe for your child.

7. It is ok to get massages?  Go to a place that has a cut out table around the belly area for your tummy and if the places wants a doctor's note be careful because they might not know how to work on pregnant women or they might not be comfortable doing it.  You can book a massage at any time during your pregnancy.  Work out those kinks!

8. DO NOT WHITEN YOUR TEETH!!!!

9. It's ok to get your nails did because the toxins in the polish won't seep into your blood streams.  But the fumes are a little discomforting so if there is a window as to sit besides it.

10. You want a facial?  Then get one.. It's safe.  Just get one for sensitive skin.. cause now that your pregnant everything will be sensitive including smells so if you get nausea easily then tell them you would like weaker scents.

11. I can't believe I am even saying this but No Tanning Beds!!!!!!

12. Can I eat fish when I'm pregnant? Click Here to find out.

13. A woman needs 300 calories more than usual per day when pregnant.

14. According to http://kidshealth.org, the reason why women gain so much during pregnancy even though the baby my only weigh 7 pounds or so is because...

  • 7.5 pounds:  average baby's weight

  • 7 pounds:     extra stored protein, fat, and other nutrients

  • 4 pounds:     extra blood

  • 4 pounds:     other extra body fluids

  • 2 pounds:     breast enlargement

  • 2 pounds:     enlargement of your uterus

  • 2 pounds:     amniotic fluid surrounding your baby

  • 1.5 pounds:  the placenta

There is also a great chart on this website that shows you what vitamins come from what food and what good it does for the baby.

15. Is giving birth going to hurt?  Hell yes it is.. :)
